Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced (about 5 cups / 750g)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (30ml)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (5ml)
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (2.5ml)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger (1.25ml)
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted (113g)
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar (200g)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (60g)
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder (2.5ml)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (1.25ml)
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5ml)

Instructions:

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples. Toss with lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
  2. Lightly grease the baking dish.
  3. Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the egg and vanilla until well combined.
  5. Pour the topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. A knife inserted into the apples should meet little resistance.
  7. Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
