Ingredients:
- 6 medium cooking apples (e.g., Bramley or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 900g / 2 lbs)
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) lemon juice
- ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons (30g) packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour (plain flour in the UK)
- ½ cup (50g) rolled oats (porridge oats)
- ½ cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ cup (115g) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
Instructions:
- Toss apple slices with lemon juice, sugars, and spices in a large bowl.
- Transfer spiced apple mixture to the baking dish. Dot with butter pieces.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender (or your fingertips) until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
- Bake in a preheated oven (375°F / 190°C / Gas Mark 5) until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly, about 35-40 minutes.
- Let cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
