Ingredients:
- 2 cups (475ml) whole milk (or non-dairy alternative)
- 2 ounces (55g) bittersweet chocolate, chopped (at least 70% cacao)
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar (or honey/maple syrup to taste)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- Pinch of ground nutmeg
- Optional: Whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings for garnish
Instructions:
- In a saucepan, combine milk, chopped chocolate, sugar, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg.
- Heat over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the spices to infuse into the milk. Don't let it boil!
- For a smoother drink, strain the chai spiced hot chocolate through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the spices. Optional, depends if you like that texture or not.
- Pour into mugs and garnish with whipped cream, marshmallows, or chocolate shavings, if desired. Serve immediately.
