Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs (900 g) Boneless, skinless Chicken Breast or Thighs, trimmed
  • 2 cups (475 ml) Low sodium, unsalted Chicken or Vegetable Stock
  • 2 Tbsp (30 ml) Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Salmon Oil
  • 5 cups (300 g) Brown Rice (long or medium grain)
  • 3 cups (710 ml) Water (for cooking rice)
  • 1 large (450 g) Sweet Potato, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup (150 g) Carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup (150 g) Green Beans or Peas (frozen is fine)
  • Veterinary-Approved Canine Vitamin/Mineral Supplement Powder (as directed on packaging)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Rice: Combine brown rice and water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 40–45 minutes until tender and liquid is absorbed. Set aside.
  2. Dice and Cook Vegetables: Peel and dice the sweet potato and carrots into bite-sized pieces (about 1/2 inch). Steam or boil the sweet potatoes and carrots until fork-tender but not mushy (about 15 minutes). Drain well.
  3. Prepare the Chicken: Dice the chicken into small, uniform pieces (no larger than 1/2 inch) to ensure even cooking and easy chewing.
  4. Cook the Chicken: In the stock pot, add the low-sodium stock and bring to a simmer. Add the diced chicken and poach gently until fully cooked through and no pink remains (about 8–10 minutes).
  5. Strain and Reserve Liquid: Drain the cooked chicken, reserving about 1/2 cup (120ml) of the cooking liquid. This reserved liquid can be used later to moisten the final mixture.
  6. Combine the Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked brown rice, cooked chicken, steamed sweet potato, carrots, and the frozen peas/green beans. Stir gently to integrate all ingredients evenly.
  7. Cool Down (Crucial Step): Spread the mixture onto a large baking sheet or dish to allow it to cool completely (approximately 30 minutes). Do not proceed to the next step until the mixture is at room temperature.
  8. Add Fats and Supplements: Once the mixture is completely cool, drizzle in the olive oil (or salmon oil) and thoroughly mix in the measured amount of the canine vitamin/mineral supplement powder, following the product's instructions precisely.
  9. Portion and Store: Divide the finished food into daily serving sizes (consulting your vet's recommendations) and store in airtight containers in the refrigerator (up to 5 days) or freezer.
