Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup / 150g)
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional for a subtle smoky hint)
  • 4 slices American cheese (or processed cheddar slices), halved
  • 2 hero rolls or hoagie rolls (about 6–8 inches each)
  • 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce (or leaf lettuce)
  • 1 medium tomato, sliced
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp ketchup (optional)
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard (optional)
  • Butter or oil for toasting sandwich rolls

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the vegetables: Finely chop the onion, slice the tomato, and shred the lettuce.
  2. Cook the onions: Heat a skillet over medium heat with oil or butter; add the chopped onions and cook until translucent and slightly golden.
  3. Brown the beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions, break up and chop the meat, and season with kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Cook until the beef is fully browned.
  4. Add the cheese: Arrange the cheese halves evenly on top of the meat mixture and cover the skillet loosely to allow the cheese to melt.
  5. Prepare the rolls: Slice the hero rolls lengthwise, keeping one side hinged. Butter the outsides lightly and toast them on a separate pan until golden brown.
  6. Assemble the sandwiches: Spread mayonnaise inside the toasted rolls, spoon the hot chopped beef and cheese mixture onto each roll, then top with shredded lettuce, tomato slices, and add ketchup and mustard if desired.
  7. Serve immediately while hot with your favourite sides.
