Ingredients:
- 1 box (15.25 oz / 430 g) cake mix (any flavor)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup (240 ml) water
- 1/2 cup (113 g) unsalted butter, melted
- 12 oz (340 g) chocolate chips or candy melts (any color)
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) coconut oil (optional, for thinning the coating)
- Crushed nuts, sprinkles, or shredded coconut (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare the cake mix according to package instructions (mix eggs, water, and melted butter). Bake in the prepared pan for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack and let it cool completely.
- Once cooled, crumble the cake into a large mixing bowl until it resembles fine crumbs.
- Optional: Add frosting (around 1/2 cup / 120 g) for moisture and flavor. Mix thoroughly until combined.
- Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions and roll them into balls. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.
- In a melting pot or microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate or candy melts with coconut oil until smooth.
- Using a toothpick or fork, dip each ball into the melted coating and let the excess drip off. Place back on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
- While the coating is still wet, sprinkle with desired toppings.
- Allow the coating to set at room temperature before serving.
