Ingredients:
- 2 cups arepa flour (masarepa) (240g)
- 2 ½ cups warm water (600ml)
- 1 teaspoon salt (5g)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (optional, for richness) (15ml)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (120g)
- 1 cup cooked, shredded chicken (or any desired protein) (120g)
- 1 avocado, sliced
- Salsa or hot sauce, to taste
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine arepa flour and salt. Gradually add warm water, mixing with your hands until a soft dough forms. Let rest for about 5 minutes to hydrate the flour.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it gently into a disc about 1-inch thick.
- Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add a thin layer of oil to the pan (optional). Cook arepas for about 5-7 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Arepas should sound hollow when tapped on the side. Cook a little longer if needed.
- Slice open each arepa and fill with your desired ingredients like cheese, chicken, or avocado.
