Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 680g)
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar (Approximately 50g)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (5ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (1ml)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (Approximately 20g)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (Approximately 30ml)
  • 1/4 cup water (Approximately 60ml)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (Approximately 120g)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (not instant) (Approximately 45g)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (Approximately 100g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (2.5ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (1ml)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed (Approximately 113g)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the Apples: In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, lemon juice, and water. Toss to coat evenly.
  3. Make the Crumb Topping: In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Cut in the Butter: Using a pastry blender or your fingers, cut the cold, cubed butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Assemble and Bake: Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the topping is browning too quickly, tent with foil.
  7. Cool Slightly: Let cool slightly before serving.
