Ingredients:

  • 6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 1.3kg / 3 lbs)
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (30g) packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) all-purpose flour (plain flour)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour (plain flour)
  • 1 cup (90g) rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick/113g) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt. Toss to coat evenly.
  2. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out in an even layer.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple filling.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving. This prevents scorching your tongue!
