Ingredients:
- 6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 1.3kg / 3 lbs)
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup (30g) packed light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) lemon juice, freshly squeezed
- 2 tablespoons (30g) all-purpose flour (plain flour)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour (plain flour)
- 1 cup (90g) rolled oats (not instant)
- 1/2 cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick/113g) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt. Toss to coat evenly.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out in an even layer.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple filling.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling.
- Let cool slightly before serving. This prevents scorching your tongue!
