Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2/3 cup cocoa
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour baking pans or line the bottoms of round pans with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes until the batter is smooth.
  4. Stir in the boiling water by hand using a whisk or spatula until combined.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes for a 9x13 inch pan, or 30 to 35 minutes for 8-inch rounds, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Prepare frosting by stirring melted butter into cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating until fluffy. Stir in vanilla extract.
