Ingredients:
- 1 box (15.25 oz / 430 g) chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients called for on the box)
- 1 cup (240 ml) frosting (homemade or store-bought, any flavor)
- 1 ½ cups (265 g) candy melts or chocolate chips (white, milk, or dark)
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) coconut oil or vegetable oil (to thin the chocolate)
- Sprinkles, edible glitter, or crushed nuts (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven according to cake mix instructions.
- Prepare the baking pan with cooking spray or lining.
- Mix and bake the cake as per package instructions until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Allow the baked cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
- Crumble the cake into a large mixing bowl using your hands, ensuring no large chunks remain.
- Add the frosting to the crumbled cake, mixing until fully incorporated and the mixture holds together well.
- Shape the mixture into balls, approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter and place the balls on a baking sheet lined with wax paper.
- Refrigerate the formed cake balls for about 30 minutes to firm up.
- Melt the candy melts or chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth. Add coconut oil to thin if needed.
- Dip the tip of each cake pop stick into the melted chocolate and then insert it into the bottom of each cake ball.
- Dip each cake ball into the melted chocolate, allowing excess to drip off.
- While the coating is still wet, add sprinkles or other decorations as desired and secure the cake pops in a styrofoam block to dry completely.
