Ingredients:

  • 8-10 Grade A Vanilla Beans (approx. 15-20 cm long)
  • 8 fl oz (237 ml) Vodka (80 proof or higher), Bourbon, or Rum

Instructions:

  1. Slice vanilla beans lengthwise, leaving a small portion connected at the top.
  2. Place the split vanilla beans into the glass bottle.
  3. Pour the vodka (or bourbon/rum) over the vanilla beans, ensuring they are fully submerged.
  4. Seal the bottle tightly and store in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight.
  5. Shake the bottle vigorously every week or so.
  6. Let the mixture steep for at least 6 months, but preferably 12 months or longer, for the richest flavor. The extract will darken in color over time.
  7. Strain the extract through a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth for a clearer liquid, if desired. Return to bottle for use. Beans can stay in bottle if desired.
