Ingredients:

  • 2 (5-ounce) cans tuna in water, drained well (140g each)
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise (60 ml), full-fat for best flavour
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped celery (30 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped red onion (15 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15 ml), fresh is best
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (1 ml), freshly ground
  • Pinch of salt (to taste)
  • 4 slices of your favourite bread
  • Lettuce leaves (optional)
  • Sliced tomato (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Open the tuna cans and drain the water thoroughly. Press the tuna against the colander to extract excess water.
  2. In a mixing bowl, add the drained tuna, mayonnaise, celery, red onion, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  3. Gently mix all ingredients until well combined. Don't overmix; you want to retain some texture.
  4. Give it a taste! Add more salt, pepper, or lemon juice as needed to achieve your desired flavour profile.
  5. Spread the tuna salad evenly onto two slices of bread. Top with lettuce and tomato, if desired. Cover with the remaining slices of bread.
  6. Cut the sandwiches in half and serve immediately.
