Ingredients:
- 1 cup (170g / 6 oz) Chocolate Chips (semi-sweet, milk, dark, or white)
- Optional: 1 teaspoon (5 ml) Vegetable Oil or Shortening
Instructions:
-
Method 1: Microwave (Fast & Furious)
- Place chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. If using, add oil or shortening.
- Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each interval.
- Continue microwaving in 15-second intervals (or less, as the chocolate gets close to melting), stirring well each time. Stop microwaving when only a few chocolate chips remain solid.
- Stir vigorously until all the chocolate is melted and smooth. The residual heat will melt the remaining chips.
- Be vigilant! Overheating is the biggest risk with this method. This is how to melt chocolate chips the fast way.
-
Method 2: Double Boiler (Slow & Steady)
- Fill a saucepan with about 1-2 inches of water and bring to a gentle simmer. Place a heat-safe bowl on top of the saucepan, ensuring the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the water.
- Place chocolate chips in the bowl. If using, add oil or shortening.
- Heat the chocolate, stirring frequently with a rubber spatula, until almost completely melted.
- Remove the bowl from the double boiler.
- Continue stirring until all the chocolate is melted and smooth. The residual heat will melt the remaining chips.
- Ensure water remains at a simmer, not a rolling boil.
