Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (170g / 6 oz) Chocolate Chips (semi-sweet, milk, dark, or white)
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon (5 ml) Vegetable Oil or Shortening

Instructions:

  1. Method 1: Microwave (Fast & Furious)

    1. Place chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. If using, add oil or shortening.
    2. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each interval.
    3. Continue microwaving in 15-second intervals (or less, as the chocolate gets close to melting), stirring well each time. Stop microwaving when only a few chocolate chips remain solid.
    4. Stir vigorously until all the chocolate is melted and smooth. The residual heat will melt the remaining chips.
    5. Be vigilant! Overheating is the biggest risk with this method. This is how to melt chocolate chips the fast way.
  2. Method 2: Double Boiler (Slow & Steady)

    1. Fill a saucepan with about 1-2 inches of water and bring to a gentle simmer. Place a heat-safe bowl on top of the saucepan, ensuring the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the water.
    2. Place chocolate chips in the bowl. If using, add oil or shortening.
    3. Heat the chocolate, stirring frequently with a rubber spatula, until almost completely melted.
    4. Remove the bowl from the double boiler.
    5. Continue stirring until all the chocolate is melted and smooth. The residual heat will melt the remaining chips.
    6. Ensure water remains at a simmer, not a rolling boil.
