  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) finely chopped red onion
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) capers, drained and chopped
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of sugar (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, add mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, chopped red onion, lemon juice, capers, Dijon mustard, black pepper, and sugar (if using).
  2. Gently whisk or stir all ingredients together until thoroughly combined. Avoid overmixing.
  3. Taste the tartar sauce and adjust seasonings as needed. Add more lemon juice for tanginess, pepper for a kick, or a pinch of sugar to balance the flavors.
  4. For best flavor, cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. However, it's perfectly fine to serve immediately.
  5. Serve chilled or at room temperature alongside your favorite seafood, fried foods, or other dishes.
