Ingredients:

  • 1 (15-ounce / 425g) can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) water
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) fresh lime juice (from about 2 limes)
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil
  • 1/4 cup (chopped) cilantro leaves and stems (optional)
  • 1-2 cloves garlic, minced (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

Instructions:

  1. Place all ingredients into a food processor or blender.
  2. Process until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy. Scrape down the sides as needed. Add a tablespoon of water at a time if needed to reach desired consistency.
  3. Taste the spread and adjust seasonings as needed. Add more lime juice for brightness, cumin for smokiness, chili powder for heat, or salt to taste.
  4. For best flavor, transfer the black bean spread to a container and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld.
  5. Serve chilled or at room temperature with your favorite dippers.
