Ingredients:
- 4 links (approx. 1 lb) Fresh, uncooked Bratwurst Sausages
- 1 teaspoon Neutral Cooking Oil (e.g., Canola, Grapeseed)
- Coarse Sea Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper, to taste
- 1 large Yellow Onion, sliced
- 1 large Red Bell Pepper, sliced
- 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
- 4 Sausage Buns/Rolls
- 1 cup drained Sauerkraut (optional)
- Grainy Mustard, to taste
Instructions:
- Prep the Brats: Gently pat the bratwurst links dry with a paper towel. Place them in a small bowl, drizzle with the 1 teaspoon of neutral oil, and toss lightly to coat. Season very lightly with salt and pepper.
- Preheat: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Preheating is key for achieving that crispy exterior without overcooking the inside.
- Prepare Toppings (Optional): If using the onion and pepper mix, toss the sliced vegetables with the 1 tablespoon of olive oil and a pinch of salt. Set aside.
- Initial Cook: Place the oiled Air Fryer Brats in the preheated air fryer basket in a single layer. Do not pierce the skins. Ensure there is adequate space around each link.
- First Half: Air fry for 8–10 minutes. The skins should start to tighten and brown lightly.
- Flip and Add Vegetables: Carefully use the tongs to flip the brats. If using the optional onion and pepper mix, scatter the seasoned vegetables around the brats now.
- Finish Cooking: Continue to air fry for another 7–10 minutes, or until the brats are deeply golden brown and the internal temperature reaches a minimum of 160°F (71°C) when checked with an instant-read thermometer.
- Rest: Remove the sausages and vegetables immediately from the air fryer. Place them on a plate and tent loosely with foil. Allow them to rest for 5 minutes.
- Toast Buns (Optional): While the brats rest, place the rolls face-down in the empty air fryer basket for 1–2 minutes at 350°F (175°C) to lightly toast them.
- Serve: Place one bratwurst in each toasted bun. Top generously with the air-fried onions and peppers, sauerkraut, and a generous dollop of grainy mustard.
