Ingredients:
- 1 pound (454g) Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1 medium apple (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp preferred), peeled, cored, and finely diced
- 1/4 cup (30g) finely chopped onion
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh sage leaves
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 package (14-17 ounces/397-482g) frozen puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon milk or water
- Everything bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds (optional)
Instructions:
- Brown the sausage in a skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess grease.
- Stir in the diced apple, onion, sage, and pepper. Cook until the apple is slightly softened. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Unfold the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface.
- Spread the sausage mixture evenly over the puff pastry.
- Roll the puff pastry tightly into a log. Use a pizza cutter to slice the log into approximately 1-inch thick rounds.
- Place the rounds on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with egg wash. Sprinkle with desired garnish (optional).
- Bake in a preheated oven until golden brown and the pastry is puffed.
