Ingredients:
- 4 cups (960 ml) Whole Milk
- 1 cup (200 g) Granulated Sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
Instructions:
- In the saucepan, whisk together the milk, sugar, and salt until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly to prevent sticking and burning, especially at the bottom of the pan.
- Reduce the heat to low and continue to simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally (every 5-10 minutes at first, then more frequently as it thickens).
- Continue simmering until the mixture has reduced by about half and has thickened to the consistency of heavy cream or a light syrup. This can take 45-60 minutes. Watch it carefully – it will thicken more as it cools. A good visual cue is that it should coat the back of a spoon.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool completely. It will thicken further as it cools.
- Pour the cooled sweetened condensed milk into a clean, airtight container and refrigerate. It will thicken slightly more in the fridge.
