Ingredients:

  • 4 cups (960 ml) Whole Milk
  • 1 cup (200 g) Granulated Sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt

Instructions:

  1. In the saucepan, whisk together the milk, sugar, and salt until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly to prevent sticking and burning, especially at the bottom of the pan.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and continue to simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally (every 5-10 minutes at first, then more frequently as it thickens).
  4. Continue simmering until the mixture has reduced by about half and has thickened to the consistency of heavy cream or a light syrup. This can take 45-60 minutes. Watch it carefully – it will thicken more as it cools. A good visual cue is that it should coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely. It will thicken further as it cools.
  6. Pour the cooled sweetened condensed milk into a clean, airtight container and refrigerate. It will thicken slightly more in the fridge.
