Ingredients:

  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (Optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 8 slices brioche or challah bread, about 1-inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
  • Optional: powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries, whipped cream, for serving

Instructions:

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream (if using), vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and sugar until well combined.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, making sure to soak both sides. Don't oversaturate! Let the excess drip off.
  3. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  4. Place the soaked bread slices in the hot skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Repeat with the remaining bread and butter. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings.
